What makes Communicating-Hands classes and workshops different and unique? All our
instructors are either qualified BSL interpreters, or hold a BSL qualification and
have been specially trained by qualified interpreters. Some of our instructors have
teaching qualifications and one has a diploma in childcare. Those with children
have taught their own children sign and therefore have the right educational expertise
and personal experience to share.

Using Signs from British Sign Language (BSL) can be a compliment to your existing
curriculum. BSL gives children an extra tool to facilitate communication and language
development.
With so many languages spoken in Peterborough/Cambridgeshire Schools today, childcare
professional face a daily challenge. When it comes to communicating with many of
the children whose first language is not English, BSL acts as a ‘visual bridge’
between cultures and can help a child understand English much quicker.
By integrating signs from BSL into a preschool curriculum it enhances literacy skills
needed for school success in reading, vocabulary and spelling. In addition centres
that use sing language to aid communication find that:
- A child’s frustration, tantrums, biting and screaming are reduced
because they can express their needs and wants.
- Helps integrate children with disabilities and language difficulties
- Facilitates visual and kinaesthetic learning
- Adds fun to daily routine and music activities
- Helps meet the criteria required by OFSTED for the key principles
of the EYFS framework. (Our workshops will show how)
